Living & Celebrating the Nguzo Saba - Kwanzaa's 7 Principles with Dr. Amilcar Shabazz & Twice as Smart Students

Kwanzaa was started in 1966 by Dr. Maula Karenga, an African-American teacher. He wanted people to learn more about African history, culture and customs. Dr. Karenga took the name for the holiday from the Swahili word, “Kwanza,” which means first fruits of the harvest.” The extra “a” was added so the name would have seven letters to match the seven principles of Kwanzaa. First harvest is a time of great celebration in many African regions. Kwanzaa is a joyful occasion.

Dr. Shabazz is a professor at UMass Amherst and the author of an award-winning book. He commentates on contemporary issues and history in local, national, and international media, and is the former President of the National Council for Black Studies. He has taught all over the world and works toward reparative justice.
