Subject: Racism in the Greenfield Police
Racial Discrimination in the Greenfield Police Department
On May 6th, a jury in Hampshire Superior Court found the City of Greenfield and Police Chief Robert Haigh guilty of racial discrimination against officer Patrick Buchanan. The jury awarded Officer Buchanan $92,930 dollars in back wages and $350,000 dollars for emotional distress.
This lawsuit against the Greenfield Police department is the latest in a series of lawsuits dating back some years where the Town had to pay out settlements to people because of Police misconduct.
If you read the Court documents the racial discrimination and harrasment is much worse than the news accounts make them out to be. See below to read the documents.
People should also note that Police Officer Daniel McCarthy, the officer who had (and may still have) a confederate flag hanging in his garage plays a key role in the harrasment of Officer Buchanan.
On Monday May 16th at 6:00 pm the City Council will be meeting in a closed session. It is expected that the Mayor will ask them to fund an appeal of this jury’s verdict.
We are appalled that the Mayor of Greenfield wants to continue to fight this court case.
Stand Out Against Racism – Do Not Appeal the Verdict

Starting around 5:30pm there will be a gathering of Greenfield residents outside the Town Hall to demand that the City not appeal this jury’s decision and that the Mayor clean out the Police department of those responsible for the racist atmosphere.
